Perfect for the holiday season, this
sequel to "Smoke on the Mountain" sees the Sanders family return to
Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, in the North Carolina mountains, on
Christmas Eve, 1941. It's three weeks after the bombing of Pearl
Harbor and FDR's declaration of war. Rev. Oglethorpe (Sherrad Hayes) has invited the Sanders family back to Mount Pleasant to
sing and witness, getting the congregation into the holiday spirit. As family patriarch Burl (Bill Nixon) says in the opening moments of the play, it's probably the last chance the family will have to sing and play together. One of the twins, Dennis (Bo Powers), will be shipping off to boot camp in a few days. Reformed ex-con Uncle Stanley (Larry James Cook) has returned from California where he has been recording music. He's just completed a bit part in a movie with Gene Autry but is glad to be back home and around the family one more time. The other twin, Denise (Crystal Clark) is finishing her last year at Cullowhee Bible School and is eager to consecrate herself to USO service, comforting and entertaining the GIs. However, Vera (Donna Green), the devouring mother and driving force behind the Sanders family, has other plans. Eldest daughter June (Carly Clark), who "doesn't sing, she signs," has been spending a lot of time with the good reverend. But the timid mother's boy whose mother has recently been called to her eternal paradise hasn't yet worked up the nerve to propose. Filled with hilarious yuletide stories, slapstick comedy and over two dozen Christmas songs and hymns, "the Sanders Family Christmas" will keep the audience laughing, clapping and singing. Richly entertaining, this wildly infectious musical brings your "Smoke on the Mountains" friends back for a joyously nostalgic Americana Christmas. |
